The latest conflict with Gaza proved that Germany remains one of Israel’s most sound and reliable allies. As rockets continued to rain on Israeli cities, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas visited the Jewish state to offer his country’s unwavering support and solidarity. German Chancellor Angela Merkel repeatedly affirmed Israel’s right to self-defense stating that “It is right that Israel strikes back…and strikes back hard.”

This fall, as Angela Merkel retires after 16 years in power, national parliamentary elections will lead Germany into a new political era. For the first time in German history, the Greens lead in polls, promising a far-reaching shift in the country’s domestic and foreign policy. Björn Stritzel, Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for Germany’s largest newspaper, BILD, will join us to discuss possible scenarios, and the impact of the German elections on the country’s policy agenda in the Middle East, on the Iranian threat, and vis-à-vis Israel.
